StarCraft II Faq

StarCraft II Frequently Asked Questions (Faq)

Q: What is StarCraft II?

A: StarCraft II is the ultimate competitive real-time strategy game, and the sequel to the hit original, StarCraft. The game will include three completely distinct and balanced races, the protoss, terran, and zerg, which have been overhauled and re-imagined with a number of new units for each, as well as new tricks for some of the classic units that are returning.

Q: When is the game coming out?

A: It's OUT!

Q: How is StarCraft II different from StarCraft?

A: StarCraft II runs on a vibrant new 3D-graphics engine capable of rendering beautiful landscapes as well as massive army sizes. The speed, responsiveness, and epic-scale battles that made the original StarCraft such a memorable game are all realized in 3D with this brand-new engine. We also introduced a number of distinct new units to the protoss, terran, and zerg, and some of the familiar units that return in StarCraft II will have new tricks up their sleeves, which will give the game its own unique flavor. The maps themselves will also offer new interactive elements that enhance the strategic nature of the game and create more tactical points of interest for players to contest. One example of this is the XelNaga watchtower structurewhen captured, it reveals line of sight over a large area of the map, creating an advantage for the player in control of the tower. In addition, Battle.net has been overhauled with some new and exciting features to enhance online play and competition, while the single-player campaign also offers some unique aspects for players to enjoy.

Q: How many cinematic cut-scenes are included?

A: We know that StarCraft II players expect to see some Blizzard-quality cinematic content in the game, and we have included multiple pre-rendered cinematics, starting with the intro movie. StarCraft IIs advanced 3D engine also allows us to create numerous in-engine cutscenes to help tell the games epic story. The Blizzard cinematics team is working closely with the StarCraft II development team to ensure that these in-engine cutscenes are as enjoyable and compelling to watch as the pre-rendered cinematic scenes.

Q: How many races are in StarCraft II?

A: In StarCraft II, players will see the return of the protoss, terran, and zerg races. Our goal is to ensure that all the factions in the game play even more distinctly from one another than in the original StarCraft, while still maintaining the fine balance that helped make StarCraft a classic. Were also introducing a number of new units to each race, as well as modifying some of the familiar units returning in StarCraft II. With these design refinements and the new features we have planned for the single-player and multiplayer elements of the game, StarCraft II will offer a next-generation StarCraft experience.

Q: It seems like there are sweeping balance changes almost every time I read about StarCraft II. What are the reasons for the changes?

A: The development team experiments a lot with the game balance. This can include adding, removing, and/or modifying various units, buildings, and special abilities within the game. Frequent changes to units and abilities are a natural part of our iterative development process as we strive to make StarCraft II as balanced and fun as possible.

Q: What can you about StarCraft II single-player component?

A: The games plot picks up several years after the events of StarCraft: Brood War. Familiar faces return, such as Jim Raynor, the reluctant terran hero from the original StarCraft, and new heroes and villains have emerged. The single-player campaign allows players to interact closely with these characters while determining their own course through the game via mission choices and technology upgrades.

Trilogy:

Q: What is the StarCraft II Trilogy?

A: The StarCraft II Trilogy consists of the base StarCraft II game and two subsequent expansion sets. StarCraft II is subtitled Wings of Liberty (working title) and will include a lengthy single-player campaign that focuses on the terrans and puts players in the role of Jim Raynor, one of the series' main heroes. The first expansion set, Heart of the Swarm (working title), will follow later and include a single-player campaign focusing on the zerg and Kerrigan, Queen of Blades. The second expansion set, Legacy of the Void (working title), will continue the story experience with a single-player campaign centered on the protoss.

Q: Are we still be able to play multiplayer matches of StarCraft II with all three races?

A: Yes! From the beginning, StarCraft II is a fully featured multiplayer game, and all three races will be available for competitive play.

Q: How will the expansion sets impact multiplayer gameplay?

A: The expansion sets will add new content to each race for use in multiplayer matches. This could include additions such as new units, abilities, and structures, along with new maps and Battle.net updates.

Q: If I buy StarCraft II but don't buy any of the expansion sets, will I still be able to play online?

A: Yes. This will work similarly to Warcraft III and the original StarCraft, which maintained separate online gaming lobbies and ladders for expansion set players and players with the base Warcraft III or StarCraft.

Q: How long is each of the campaigns?

A: StarCraft II's terran campaign will consist of approximately 26 to 30 missions, and each expansion set will include a similar number of missions. This means that the complete StarCraft II Trilogy will include as many as 90 single-player missions. This allows us to create a truly epic story experience with a great variety of unique missions and gameplay types.

Q: Why did you decide to release each race's campaign separately?

A: We're aiming to push the boundaries of storytelling and character development in RTS games through the unique single-player campaign design of StarCraft II. Players will be able to choose their mission path and technology upgrades for their army as they advance through the campaign. In order to make these choices meaningful while creating an epic story and well-developed characters for each faction, we needed to focus on a single race for a large number of missions.

The Trilogy also allows us to create more in-game and prerendered cinematics to tell the story in between missions. There will be more interactive sets and elements for players to explore during each campaign, along with other interesting design elements to differentiate the single-player game from multiplayer matches. For example, the technology choices within the terran single-player campaign will include special upgrades and unit types that are unique to the single-player game. These could include the ability to purchase classic units such as the wraith or firebat to add to Jim Raynor's army.

Q: Are these three separate games? How much will all of these games cost?

A: The StarCraft II Trilogy will consist of the base StarCraft II game and two expansion sets. Pricing on these games hasn't been determined at this early stage; however, we've always charged an appropriate price for the content the player receives, and we will continue to release high-quality games that offer great value.
Q: How long will it take to ship each expansion set in the Trilogy?

A: We're still focused on developing the base StarCraft II game, and all the content associated with the terran campaign, including the missions, cinematic cutscenes, and interactive sets. It's too early to provide an estimate on how long it will take to develop each of the expansion sets in the trilogy, but as always, we will take as much time as is needed to create the best possible gaming experience with each expansion set.

Q: Does StarCraft II include a map editor?

A: Yes, it does. We have more details on the features of the StarCraft II map editor at a later date.

Q: Will there be a console version of StarCraft II?

A: StarCraft II was developed for Windows and Mac. We have no current plans to bring the game to any console platform.

The Basics

The Basics - What every Starcraft Player should know

Basically:

StarCraft II is a strategy game played in real-time. You see the action from a top-down perspective and command your armies to gain control of the battlefield and ultimately defeat your opponents. The game`s single-player campaign focuses on the terrans, but you can play multiplayer matches as any of the three StarCraft II races: the terrans, the protoss, or the zerg.

Each race has access to unique units; these units fill specific roles on the battlefield. Combining different units to form versatile armies is one path to victory.

The most basic units at your command are your workers. They harvest the resources you need to expand your base and to add more units to your growing army, and your workers also create new buildings. More advanced units become available once your base meets certain requirements, such as having constructed certain buildings or researched certain technologies.

In multiplayer matches, you win the game when you`ve wiped all your enemy`s buildings off the map or if the other players surrender to you.

Tips

Tips - What every Starcraft Player should know:

This information was taken directly off the Blizzard SC2 forumns and I believe it's 100% correct. Rather than re-inventing the wheel I will post his owrds here. Credit should go to forumn and Ladder Player Named GRUNT for this valuable insight.

Multi-player

Mindset:

- Be patient and slow to anger. Its the internet. It doesn't matter what someone else says or does to a large extent. But getting angry or frustrated will effect your decision-making and focus.

- Don't chalk up a loss to something being 'Overpowered, Imbalanced, Cheesy', as these labels are irrelevant (I was void ray rushed two times so far, and the third fourth and fifth time I countered easily).

- Think of losing as a good thing, it's a way to refine your strategy and to learn what does and does not work.

- Aggression is a great attribute to have and will separate average from good players.

- Be gracious, win or loss.

Pre-Match

- Develop a basic strategy as to what you'd like to implement against your opponent after viewing his or her race.

- Look at the maps before you load and think of likely opponent positioning so as to know where to scout

- Be comfortable and have a familiar set of keybinds for important groups / structures

Beginning Game

- Have your build order on paper, or in your mind, and adhere to it strictly in the first 30 seconds

- Get your econ going asap and follow your general build order until you scout

- Scout. This is the most important thing in nearly any RTS. Scout their base asap, and scout the corners of your base and your closest expansion site.

- After scouting, switch your build order based on what you've seen of your opponent.

- Begin building your units / structures in reliance on scouting data to maximize your rush, and how you plan to counter their army

- Rush the opponent if your strategy calls for it, otherwise position your army so as to counter their rush

- Attack your enemy at their base, or if you can find their army in the field. Your goal here is to decimate their army and to then ruin their economy / troop building capacity, and to ascertain (if you fail) the types of units you will need to build to counter. Don't be afraid to attack. Attacking early places you as the arbiter of your own fate. As is said in the responses, usually active beats reactive.

- Attempt to inflict economy damage and avoid economy damage of your own

- At the end of the beginning stage of a match, depending on the success or failure of your rush, be ready to switch strategies.

- Only continue employing the same strategy if you have a decisive econ / unit advantage

Mid-game

- Get your expansion going unless you were all-in initially (ie your strategy previously employed dictates that if you fail you lose)

- Scout other areas to determine if your opponent has expanded

- Constantly produce troops, workers, upgrades

- Amass a main group with support (ex: Marines, Marauders and Medivacs)

- Employ a secondary group for harassing opponents econ / countering specific types of units (ex: helions to non-ranged infantry, thors or vikings to counter mass, banelings to counter clumps of infantry)

- Continue expanding and focus on map-control. Part of map-control is constant intel as to where your opponent is expanding and where you can expand to.

Late-game

- If you are losing the economy battle you will have to focus on out microing your opponent. One good way would be to arrange ambushes on his armies, or to do coordinate strikes at multiple locations simultaneously to force him to focus on micro instead of macro. You need to regain the macro advantage, negate his, or destroy vital pieces of his army.

- Continually expand and accrue intelligence from scouting

Post-game

- This is the single most important aspect of becoming a better player: WATCH REPLAYS and learn what you did right/wrong and learn what your opponent did right and wrong.

- I use a word document to write down any strategy that worked or failed against which race and my opinion as to why. Additionally, I write down trends in early-game so I understand what rush I will be facing in the future, and how I should counter.

- Don't get frustrated. Replay Losses are a positive good. They provide you with free education. Think of losses as personal instruction from your opponent.

Summary (TLDR Version):

- Watch replays and learn

- Don't get mad

- Implement lessons

Single-player

- Play the campaign once on normal, going for achievements that first play through if you so desire.

- Play the campaign once on hard, going for achievements if you desire.

- Save and save often.

- Do the challenges. The challenges in my opinion are Blizzard's way of teaching beginners how to macro and how to micro and how to counter.

- Save during the challenges; you will still get the achievements.

- Store your money and purchase an entire line of upgrades in order to get an achievement and then reload that save ;)

- Replay any branching missions (missions in which you had multiple choices)

- Play custom games against the computer

Again, Credit for this Tip's page goes to SC2 player handle GRUNT

Very well done.
